Abi

Abi, originally uploaded by ventnorgraphic.co.uk.

Traditional black and white portraiture of the highest quality. The framing is so superb, and all the textures down to her frleckles on her face are so perfectly rendered.

D'ya like it Robbie?

What a cheeky devil this guy is.

My lovely Mum

., originally uploaded by sweet distin.

I had to do this other pair of wonderful portraits from Vicky, another long-time contributor.

Vicky has really puther mother at ease here, which shows such great skill on behalf of the photographer, but also there is an amazing look of total unquestioning trust emanating from her mum.

Harry listens to a podcast

I love this one too, a 70 year old keeping up with the times. Well, 70 is the new 50, so they say.

Mi madre

Mi madre, originally uploaded by madeinsheffield.

This is such a wonderful portrait from Charlotte, a star from this blog's sister blog, 365 Londoners.

Such a wonderful warm portrait, the photographer's mum where she looks most at home.

We've had such a great April full of sunshine. This guy really shows it on his face. It's been a great spring, now roll on the summer. That's what I think he's saying anyway.

Father and Son

Another family portrait from York to conclude this week. Great family traits on these guys' faces.

Candy Cane for your Portrait

More from the York session of "Candy cane for your Portrait"

I'll link in to other places where this project has been done once I get my act together.

Dressed to kill????

Dressed to kill????, originally uploaded by mortimer?.

Last weekend, in York, some Flickr people got together and conducted a mini-social experiment - to see how many people they could take portraits of by offering them sweets. This kind of thing has been done elsewhere - I'll add some more links - it's kind of interesting to see the variety of faces against the same background.

I really love this family portrait, it's one of the first we've had I think.

for more of the candy cane portraits, see here.

Rangers Back on Top Again

Rangers Back on Top Again, originally uploaded by jimbodownie.

A Rangers shirt on the streets of Edinburgh? the kid must have nerve!

Anyway a fantastic traditional B&W portrait of a little guy enjoying the past week's sunshine we've had everywhere.

Fresh Fruit and Slip Knot

Fresh Fruit and Slip Knot, originally uploaded by Dr Joolz.

And now we've moved on to York.

Here Joolz asked the dreadlocked girl for permission. She said yes (as we can see) and said that she likes being asked, and usually people just take it regardless.

Which raises another question - do people flamboyanty dressed usually have a lot of self-confidence and therefore to they like being asked to have their photo taken more often?

Jack

Jack, originally uploaded by Trois TĂȘtes (TT).

This week, a bit of discussion about why we are looking for consensual portraits, how to ask, and how different people go about asking.

Gareth met Jack Eames at his exhibition in Sheffield of the clientele of a local cafe. An interesting collection of photos, by gaining consent he gains their confidence and gets to take photos which show more feeling and tell more of a story (so I think).

Jack also gave advice for people thinking of asking to take people's photos - in summary it is:

1. Take a photo without the subject noticing and then show it to them - this creates a sense of trust
2. Offer prints
3. Say you are 'a photographer', it doesn't matter to the subject that you are not professional
4. Just ask, most people will agree. Don't worry too much about those who don't

I agree with most of that advice, except i don't usually take one first - but I do find that more people say yes than no.

.pink lippy, originally uploaded by sweet distin.

i've blogged a hands only portrait before, and here is a portrait without the eyes. Whilst usually the eyes tell you everything in a portrait, I think the lipstick says it all here.

Fish and chips

Fish and chips, originally uploaded by sparkywallis.

Fish and Chips by the seaside on a sunny Bank Holiday weekend. Truly, it doesn't get much better than that.

Hurt.

Hurt., originally uploaded by lucidaphotographic.

Sometimes it happens that a photgrapher loses inspiration and simply can't get anything right.

luckily in this case, a beauty of a shot still managed to shine through. Well, I hope everyone everywhere finds their inspiration, or whatever they need to conquer that block.

A wonderful studio portrait. The level of detail here and the tonality is really reminiscent of an oil painting.

Fabulous work from a photography student. I really love the imagination and use of the negative space, as well as the use of the light just to show a few scant details on the model.

Excellent lighting technique.

how beautiful! A pretty girl, a beautiful background, and very colourful expired film - seems like a pretty perfect combination.
